Transcript of WinCo shooting
A partial transcript of the 21 minutes and 34 seconds audio provided by the Twin Falls Police Department in the June 30 shooting of Logan Don Brizzee by officers Steve Benkula and Ben Mittelstadt. The recording comes from the device on Mittelstadt's belt.
After an initial briefing from WinCo security, police questioned Brizzee. He repeatedly tells police his name is Alex Peck, although the wallet he is carrying identifies him as Logan Don Brizzee. He tells police that's the name of his brother, and that he's just carrying around his brother's wallet. Police ask him if he has any photo ID proving he is Alex Peck.
Benkula: Once again, unless you have something to show who you are â€- Do you have an Idaho driver's license?
Brizzee: No, I lost myâ€- what's it called? My, all my stuff, my social and all that stuff. I lost it.
Benkula: But do you have one?
Brizzee: No.
Mittelstadt: This is what he gave me as Alex. This right here is all Logan stuff.
Brizzee: That's my brother.
Mittelstadt: That's his brother. You're saying all this stuff is your brother's?
Brizzee: Yeah. You can ask my sister that was on the phone, that's my brother's stuff.
Mittelstadt: Why would you have all your brother's stuff? Why would you be carrying it around?
Brizzee: Because it's his wallet. I never even cleaned it out. I didn't even use it, honestly.
Benkula: Stick your head up. Just sit on the table.
Mittelstadt: That's your girlfriend that's out here?
Brizzee: I don't know where she's at, but yeah, she was out there.
Mittelstadt: I'm going to step out here and see if I can talk to her.
(85 seconds with store and parking lot background noise only)
Mittelstadt: Do you have anything else on you? No merchandise? Is it alright if I pat you down?
Brizzee: No.
Benkula: It's not alright?
Brizzee: No. I already gave them everything. I've been trying to be nice to you guys and everyone's treating me bad, so. I already gave them everything. I emptied out my pockets for them, that's all.
Benkula: OK, why don't you stand up?
Brizzee: No. You already asked me if you couldâ€-
Mittelstadt: Go ahead, stand up.
Benkula: You're under arrest. Stand up, put your hands behind your back.
Brizzee: Don't (expletive) move! Don't (expletive) move!
Sounds of movement, shots fired.
Brizzee: I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
Mittelstadt: (Unintelligible) Shots fired! shots fired!
Brizzee: I'm sorry.
Benkula: Don't move, don't move!
Brizzee: I'm not moving.
Benkula: Don't move!
Brizzee: I'm sorry.
Mittelstadt: Don't move!
Benkula: What are you doing?!
Sounds of movement
Mittelstadt: Dispatch 238 we need another unit. Dispatch 238 we need an ambulance.
Benkula: Are you all right?
Unintelligible
Benkula: Is dispatch getting an ambulance here ... unintelligible.
Mittelstadt: It's coming, it's coming. Pause. Expletive.
Benkula: Are you alright?
Mittelstadt: I'm fine. What do you want me to do?
Benkula: Just pat him down real quick. Put this right here.
Sounds of gasping
Mittelstadt: Is there something we can prop him up on?
Benkula: Suspect's down.
Mittelstadt: He's still beating. (Pause) Grab that bag, prop it up under his head. (Unintelligible)
Mittelstadt: 234, 238 bring an AED [automatic external defibrillator]. We need an AED.
Sounds of officers trying to resuscitate Brizzee, who groans loudly.
Mittelstadt: I can't feel anything else. That's all we're going to need is an AED â€-
