CSI rodeo wraps up fall campaign

Times-News

The College of Southern Idaho rodeo team finished its five-rodeo fall schedule last weekend in Cedar City, Utah, at the Southern Utah University Rocky Mountain Region Rodeo.

The CSI cowboys and cowgirls, who will be off until their annual home rodeo in early March, finished the fall season in strong position to make a few runs at individual buckles when the College National Finals Rodeo comes around in June.

The CSI cowboys are ranked third in the region and 11th nationally with 2,234.5 points, while the Golden Eagles cowgirls are second in the region and sixth nationally with 1,323 points. Part of the CSI cowgirls' success can be attributed to former Gooding High School standout Italy Jo Sheehan, who finishes the fall ranked No. 1 in the nation in barrel racing. Sheehan has compiled 595 points in the event and capped the fall season off with a barrel racing win at the Southern Utah rodeo.

CSI bull rider Zack Elliott capped off a solid fall with two scoring rides and a first-place finish at Southern Utah that vaulted him into first in the regional standings and third nationally at 460 points.

Alex Wright is ranked sixth nationally in saddle bronc, while Drew Hummel is eighth in the nation in tie-down roping. Shane Oliver has also been solid in bull riding and is 13th in the nation.

Former Oakley standout Cade Taylor ends the fall ranked fourth in saddle bronc and 10th as a team roping heeler in regional competition, while Dustin Gilstrap, Drew Hummel and Tyson Brown are all ranked among the top five competitors in their respective events.

The Idaho State cowboys and cowgirls are ranked fourth and third, respectively in Rocky Mountain Region competition.

While the Golden Eagles won't be tearing up the arena floor in competition for a few months, they'll keep busy by planning the program's annual boxing smoker, traditionally held in late January. The event has been a yearly crowd-pleaser as CSI cowboys and cowgirls, along with members of other regional colleges, trade ropes and spurs for boxing gloves for the one-night slugfest.
