A blown transistor that knocked out power to the College of Southern Idaho gymnasium gave the CSI All-Stars a 30-minute blow, but it wasn't enough to keep the current Golden Eagles from cruising to their seventh win of the season.
Seconds after a Jessica Mesna layup ended the No. 8 Golden Eagles' 18-0 first-half run, power to the gymnasium, along with a portion of Twin Falls, failed, creating an impromptu 30-minute break in play. While the return of gymnasium lighting created a change that was night and day on the court, it was simply more of the same for players as the 7-1 Golden Eagles cruised to a 99-41 win during the second night of the Boise Office Equipment Challenge in Twin Falls.
While the Golden Eagles got the win, head coach Randy Rogers wasn't entirely pleased with a CSI team that started slow before finding its gamebreaking run.
"I felt like we were playing with the lights out early," Rogers said.
Former CSI teammates Sidney Orndorff and Delicia Jernigan both played for the CSI All-Stars. Orndorff started, contributing five points, while a wrong turn at Wells, Nev., kept Jernigan from reaching the gym floor until 7:40 remained in the second half. Jernigan hit a 3-pointer during her stint on the court, while Mesna's nine points led the All-Stars.
"I wanted to yell at Dee to shoot the ball," Rogers said. "It's always hard to ask kids to come back from a removed, but it's just great to see them out there."
Sophomore guard Maylene Ornelas got the Eagles going in the first half with 13 points and five steals en route to 17 points for the game, which tied freshman Soana Lucet for the game high.
The Golden Eagles are back in action at 6 p.m., playing Columbia Basin Community College of Pasco, Wash. The contest against one of the better NWAACC programs will be CSI's best test of the weekend - and one that Rogers is looking forward to.
"They'll present some fundamental problems for us," Rogers said. "They remind me of a Snow College team. I think we'll have a size advantage on them, but their posts run so hard that ours are really going going to have to work against them."
