They got exactly what they needed.
On a night during which the close game was supposed to be reserved for the College of Southern Idaho men, the Golden Eagles women pulled out a heady 84-74 win over a hard-charging Columbia Basin Community College team. The No. 8 Golden Eagles closed out their time during the Boise Office Equipment Challenge by scoring on 13 of their final trips down court to hold off a sharpshooting Hawks team that nailed 11 3-pointers, including five in the final nine minutes.
"We needed that," CSI head coach Randy Rogers said. "I think the crowd needed that. It was fun. As a coach, those are the type of games you want to be a part of."
Sophomore shooting guard Maylene Ornelas couldn't conceal her smile after the game. Of course, she had plenty of reasons for a wide grin. Ornelas set the program's single-game assist record with 14, and added five points and five steals during a night that saw her hit just 1-for-9 from the field. With her shots not falling, Ornelas found the hot players, especially freshman post Soana Lucet who finished with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds.
"I knew I wasn't shooting the ball very well, but if I could find the people who were, I would," Ornelas said. "I said, 'Fine. If you're better than me tonight, I'll get you the ball."
The Hawks were led by sophomore guard Nikki DePeel's 21 points, while hustling post Brittany Cherry added 17 points and nine rebounds. Columbia Basin hurt the 8-1 Golden Eagles with dribble penetration against a late zone, as DePeel and point guard Alexandria Allen were able to find open 3-point shots for their teammates against CSI's collapsing defense.
"We went to a zone, and you know how I just love zone," Rogers said. "I thought Maddy (Plunkett) was a little tired and just didn't get to the corner. But that's our posts' job and we're going to have to get better or teams like Salt Lake or Eastern Utah are going to beat us."
Plunkett added a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double, while Tera Tremayne hit four 3-pointers en route to 14 points for CSI. Rogers was pleased with his team's offensive execution late in the game against a team he said would compete against any team CSI has played to date.
"In these games, we want to show the fans and our coaches that we can have close games and step up," Ornelas said. "It helped us to realize we need to step it up every time and see that we can react well."
The Golden Eagles trailed 22-17 early before Tremayne helped spark a 12-0 run with five points on a transition jumper and a 3-pointer that put CSI up 30-22 with 3:04 left before heading into the break up 35-30. Tremayne, Plunkett and Pingle-Buchanan each scored eight points for CSI in the first 20 minutes.
DePeel's eight first-half points led a CBC team that went blow-for-blow with CSI in the first half as each team committed 15 turnovers.
North Idaho 95, CSI All-Stars 43
Marielle McKean's game-high 18 points led 7-2 North Idaho College to a 95-43 win over a CSI All-Stars team that went 0-3 for the tournament. Jessica Mesna led the CSI All-Stars with 10 points and eight rebounds while Tanya Lalicker added eight points in the loss.
Former CSI teammates Sidney Orndorff and Delicia Jernigan scored three and seven points, respectively.
Eastern Utah 66, Treasure Valley 45
The College of Eastern Utah went 14 players deep to defeat Treasure Valley Community College 66-45 in Saturday's early game. Ande Miller led the 7-5 Golden Eagles with 13 points while Veronica Siqueiros added 10. Ali DeKerchove led 0-6 TVCC with 12 points while Sarah Bates added 11 points and 15 rebounds.
