Idaho meth ads get big-name director
By Matt Christensen Staff Writer
The production credits to a widely known anti-meth advertising campaign just got a little loftier.
Organizers of the Meth Project have announced that Academy Award-nominated director Alejandro González Iñárritu has directed the latest in a series of TV ads for the project.
The Iñárritu ads began airing Tuesday in Montana and are expected to air soon in Idaho.
Iñárritu directed "Babel," for which he earned an Oscar nomination for best director in 2006. His first feature film, "Amores Perros," earned a nomination for best foreign film in 2000.
Iñárritu agreed to direct the TV spots after watching several of the campaign's previous ads with his children, an organizer said. He was paid a small, undisclosed amount for his participation.
The Meth Project ad campaign, which began in Montana in 2005 and now airs in several other Western states, targets children and teenagers with hard-hitting images of meth abuse.
The advertisements began showing up on Idaho TV sets in January, a year after Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter announced he was bringing the program to Idaho after officials in Montana credited the program for curbing meth use there.
