Kimberly splits at home

Game 1 wasn't kind to the Kimberly Astros, as they scratched across just one run on five hits in a 7-1 loss to visiting Bonneville on Thursday. For the first two innings of Game 2 it looked like more of the same.

But after getting outpitched, outhit and generally outplayed in Game 1, according to Kimberly coach Gary Krumm, the Astros' bats came alive in the third inning of the nightcap.

The Astros erupted for six runs in the third inning, four in the fourth, five in the third and three in the sixth to salvage a split, winning the nightcap 18-9.

A.J. Schroeder and Willy Mumm each had four hits for Kimberly, including a double and triple for Schroeder and three two-baggers for Mumm. Mumm drove in four runs while Schroeder scored four times.

But what Krumm liked the most was that his team responded, even if it took a while to do so.

"We scored one run in nine innings going into the third, so that six-run third kind of got us on track because it was pretty quiet up until then," Krumm said. "But after the first game you can't dwell on it, you just have to forget it and try and get that second one. We salvaged a split, which at this point feels OK."

Kimberly (19-7, 15-7 Area C) hosts Marsh Falls today.

Twin Falls AA wins First two in Seattle

The Class AA Twin Falls Cowboys kept up its perfect record at the Cardinal Classic II tournament in Seattle, beating the Eastside Baseball Club 3-2 at the University of Washington on Thursday.

Mitchell Dame pitched a complete game to pick up the win, staying around the plate all night and keeping the Cowboys in it until they could get the decisive hit, which came when they plated three runs in the fifth inning.

The Cowboys still left some runners on, but coach Tim Stadelmeir was happy with the intensity and tenacity the team showed in pulling out its second one-run win in as many nights.

"Offensively we haven't been able to come up with the big hit, but tonight it was good to see us win a close game," said Stadelmeir. "We're starting to play with a little more energy and that's what we've been preaching for the last couple of weeks."

The Cowboys also won their opener at the tournament late Wednesday, topping Seattle's The System 6-5.

Jacob Coats pitched a complete game, striking out 13. Offensively, Conner Watkins went 2-for-3 with a triple and Remington Pullin finished 2-for-3 with a double.

Twin Falls plays the host Wilkinson Academy tonight.

Bear Lake 9, Burley 8

Early mistakes cost Burley on the road. Bear Lake scored five runs on one hit and three errors in the first inning.

"Bear Lake is too good of a team to spot them five runs to start the game," said Burley coach Matt Peterson. "In the first inning we either walked guys or booted the ball around. We just weren't focused and ready to play to start the game."

Steve Beck pitched a complete game for Burley, throwing four shutout innings after settling down from a rough start. Despite a four-run sixth inning, the Bobcats' comeback bid fell short.

Kace Redder batted 2-for-3 with a double for Burley.

The Bobcats will play Jackson Hole (Wyo.) and Bear Lake today at Bear Lake.
