One thing is abundantly clear:The Magic Valley loves football
The votes are in, and one thing is certain: You folks love your football.

But before we get to that, a little background is in order.

For two weeks spanning late June and early July, we offered an online survey at our Web site, Magicvalley.com. The question: Which fall sports do you most enjoy reading about in the Times-News?

The results: More than 400 votes were cast.

Our purpose was to see if our vision of the sports section matches up with yours. In large part, our thoughts were confirmed. But we also learned some areas we can improve.

The biggest message sent was the one mentioned above: People in the Magic Valley love football. The top five vote-getters in the survey were all football-related.

Far and away, high school football and Boise State football were the runaway winners. We asked you to vote for up to two items. Not coincidentally, the most common combination was prep and BSU football.

Our response to the results is simple. We are going to give you what you want. That means more features, game previews and game coverage of high school football. Our hope is to provide a smorgasbord of high school grid coverage on Fridays and Saturdays, with a steady does of prep football throughout the week.

As for BSU, you'll find more coverage of the Broncos than ever before. Weekly player profiles and features, along with myriad stories and columns from every game will find their way onto the front page of the sports section.

As for Nos. 3-5 in the survey, regional college football and NFL coverage tied for third, while Idaho football was just one vote back in fifth place. We'll bump up our coverage on each of those as well.

Nearly 75 write-in votes were received. My personal favorite: "Jake Lammers' Golden Arm." Yes, we'll cover Jerome and its highly-touted senior QB.

Of course, not everyone loves football. We'll still cover CSI and high school volleyball, which happened to tie for sixth in the votes. And we certainly won't ignore the other fall sports like soccer and cross country.

As with any online poll or survey, results are far from scientific. A number of readers either misunderstood the question or simply misread it. Some votes were cast for summer and winter sports like American Legion Baseball or high school basketball. Don't worry, those things will get plenty of ink in their heyday. And those sports that spill into fall such as golf, auto racing and rodeo will still have a solid presence in our section.

We'll also do our best to provide year-round coverage of CSI basketball, which is the biggest sporting event we have here in the Magic Valley. As always, we'll have the Golden Eagles covered.

Can we do it all? Can we please everyone? Probably not. But we'll do our best to give you the type of sports section you want and deserve.

Thanks for voting.
