The Academy Award-winning documentary traces the lives of children of prostitutes in Calcutta and what happens when Zana Briski, a New York-based photographer, gives each of the children a camera and teaches them to look at the world with their own eyes. The 16th annual Thousand Springs Festival of the Arts will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. SEPT. 27 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. SEPT. 28 on Ritter Island at Thousand Springs State Park. The festival features music, local food, a beer and wine garden, and the wares of 55 accomplished artisans. New additions this year include two headliners, the Old Time Fiddlers and acoustic jazz musician Jamie Findlay from Los Angeles; emcee Danny Marona; and several artisans who are new to the festival: Dale and Tiffany Thuleen of Garden Valley with willow furniture; Boise artist Cindy Smith "The Pencil Pusher" with pencil drawings on mammals, birds and the outdoors; and feather painter Joe Watkins who uses wildlife and Native American imagery in his works. Prints of the original Ritter Island painting by watercolorist Andy Sewell will be available for sale. The event also includes other high-quality paintings, glass art, metal art, woodworking, photography, ceramics, yard sculptures, quilts, pine needle baskets, jewelry, dried flower arrangements, gourd art, restoration vintage art, antler art and weavings, craft and wildlife demonstrations (blacksmithing, wool spinning, gourd decorating, soap making and fly tying by Magic Valley Fly Fishers) and demonstrations by plein air artists. The festival is the main fundraiser of Southern Idaho Land Trust. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for children 3-12.
