Local roundup: Wood River girls win GBW title
Times-News
The Wood River girls soccer team continued its domination of Great Basin Conference West play with a 12-1 win over visiting Jerome Saturday in the district title game.
Sophomore Tanner Dredge and freshman Megan Morrell each scored four goals to fuel the Wolverines. Dredge now has 34 goals on the season.
Elsa Sweek scored twice, while Sam Johnson and Ali Appleton also notched goals in the rout.
"All in all, it was a good day for us on the field," said Wood River coach Greg Gvozdas.
The game was actually tied 1-1 early before Wood River took control. The Wolverines got off a number of shots throughout the game, but pulled away once their accuracy started to improve.
"Jerome played hard and I was glad we were able to respond," said Gvozdas.
The Tigers lost their starting goalkeeper, who took a ball to the face in the cold conditions. That absence also aided Wood River's cause.
The Wolverines move on to face Century on Thursday for state seeding purposes, with location to be determined.
Community School 10, Gooding 0
Senior central defender Keller Gibson her first ever varsity goal on a wicked free kick from 35 yards out to spur the Community School to a 10-0 win over Gooding on Saturday.
Teagen Palmer had a hat trick for the Cutthroats, while Emma Wilander and Kelly Hennessy each added two.
Hailey Rheinschild and Gabi Perenchio added the other goals for the Community School, which hosts Filer on Tuesday.
Filer 3, Declo 0
Candra Coelho's goal in the 23rd minute was enough to spur Filer to a 3-0 home win over Declo on Saturday.
The Wildcats also got second-half goals from Rocio Gutierrez and Tiffany Farnsworth, but it took a while to break Declo down.
"We were able to put a lot of pressure on them most of the game and eventually broke through," said Filer coach Shane Hild. "Declo played well but we were able to finally get enough momentum."
Filer heads to the Community School for a semifinal game on Tuesday. The winner of that game will clinch a state tournament berth.
Bliss 1, Wendell 0
Bliss beat Wendell 1-0 on the Trojans' home pitch for the second time this year, eliminating Wendell and advancing to the HDSC semifinals at Buhl on Tuesday. No other details were available.

"We had our chances, and dominated for parts (of the game)," said Community School coach Richard Whitelaw, who gave Tony Martin his "man of the match" praise. "That's just the way it goes."
Gooding is at Wendell on Monday.

Bean, Fillmore go 1-2 at Conley
The weather was poor - it prevented Twin Falls and Minico from even making it to Pocatello - but Burley's Taylor Bean and David Fillmore were once again superb.

Bean won the race in a time of 17 minutes, 27.28 seconds, with Fillmore less than a second behind. The duo finished nearly two seconds clear of the third-place finisher.
