Carter leads in sheriff's campaign contributions
By Andrea Jackson Times-News writer
Twin Falls County sheriff candidate Tom Carter has raked in more than twice the campaign donations as the incumbent, Sheriff Wayne Tousley.
Tousley, an independent sheriff of 16 years, is campaigning for a fifth term against Carter, a Republican, and fellow independents Felix Garcia and Martin Jacobs.
Carter got $23,379 in total cash contributions to date, more than Tousley's $19,287.40, according to their most recent campaign financial disclosure reports filed Tuesday.
But Tousley donated $8,440 of his own money, including a recent loan of $7,000, to his campaign. That left a total of $10,847.40 in donations from other contributors.
"I'm feeling real confident," said Tousley about his run for re-election. "I think the constituents I have are very faithful."
Jacobs and Garcia, however, haven't raised nearly as much as Carter or Tousley. Garcia pulled in $2,950 and Jacobs tallied $6,723.81 in total contributions, records show.
Tousley said he recently took out a loan for his campaign. He most recently loaned himself $7,000, records show. Before that, he frequently loaned his campaign small amounts of money for years.
It's been the most expensive of Tousley's campaigns, he said. "Contributions are down this year."
Garcia loaned himself much of his own campaign money. Most of Garcia's modest campaign contributions came from loans he gave himself. He's received a single contribution of $50, records show.
Carter said taking out loans for his campaign just isn't an option.
"I'm very fortunate, I have a very strong support from the community," he said. "You won't see any debt on my campaign disclosures. If I don't have the money to do it, I'll just do something else."
Tousley has spent the most amount of his campaign money: $19,202.24, records show.
That trumps the $15,779 Carter has spent in his effort to replace Tousley. Carter's records show him with a cash balance of $7,401.33.
Garcia, who brought in the least amount of money, also spent the least: $2,143.51. Jacobs spent $6,488.19, records show.
Candidates will need to complete a final campaign financial disclosure report after the Nov. 4 election.
