Fourth-quarter treys lift Twin Falls past Burley
Jake Hanchey scored all of his 14 points in the fourth quarter Tuesday to lift Twin Falls to a 55-44 road win over Burley.

After three quarters of back-and-forth basketball in which both teams experienced cold-shooting spells, the Bruins and Bobcats were tied 31-all heading into the final stanza. Midway through the final 8 minutes, Hanchey hit back-to-back 3-pointers, followed by a bucket inside to give Twin Falls a 10-point lead and the boost it needed.

"It gave us a huge spark, not only on offense but on the defensive side, too," Hanchey said of his 3-point bombs. "It boosted everybody's confidence."

Meanwhile, Burley was experiencing its second long stretch without a field goal. The Bobcats didn't score from the floor in the fourth quarter until just 2:21 was left on the clock. By then the Bruins had built a 14-point advantage and controlled all momentum. Jon Pulisfer led the Bruins with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

"We were out of condition a little bit in the fourth quarter, we were sucking air," said Burley forward Kyle Hepworth. "But (Twin Falls) hit some shots - three big 3s in a row - and that drained us a little bit."

It's been difficult for any visiting team to come from behind and win on Burley's floor the past two years, but Twin Falls was able to do it Tuesday. The Bruins, who were playing their first game of the season, fell behind 9-0 to start, mostly due to the Bobcats' uncharacteristic zone defense which caught Twin Falls off guard.

"I got a lump in my throat when I saw the zone because we really haven't worked on it. It wasn't the kids' fault," said Twin Falls coach Matt Harr.

Burley almost always plays man-to-man, but coach Jack Bagley said he went to zone to help dictate the tempo and counteract Twin's athleticism.

"Luckily (Twin Falls) was missing shots early on, but they caught fire in the fourth quarter," Bagley said.

The Bruins didn't hit a shot from the field until Braden Box's 3-pointer at the 7:15 mark of the second quarter.

"It was just first-game jitters," Hanchey said.

However, Burley also had an offensive lapse in the first half, going almost 10 full minutes without a field goal while senior forward Kyle Hepworth sat on the bench with foul trouble. Hepworth scored a game-high 26 points, including three 3-pointers. But he didn't have much help from his teammates in the scoring column.

"Anytime Kyle scores 26 points, that's usually going to be a good game for us," Bagley said. "But we're not going to win many games if our next highest scorer only has six points. We need to find two or three guys to step up and put the ball in the basket for us."

Burley's 45-game win streak ended with its season-opening loss to Preston on Saturday. Tuesday's loss begins a different type of streak for the Bobcats - it's their first losing streak since the 2005-06 season.

Burley (0-2) will try to pick up its first win of the season Friday at home versus Pocatello. Twin Falls (1-0) will host Skyview on Friday.
