Dressed as ninjas, fairy princesses, frogs, superheros and everything in between, hundreds of kids and their parents descended upon the College of Southern Idaho Student Recreation Center for Halloween fun on Oct. 30.
For college students juggling studies with parenthood, the activity was welcomed.
Dental assisting student Edith Suazo said coming to campus with her 4-year-old son, Jesus Gonzales, for the carnival was a great way to integrate student and parent life.
"I was able to tell him that this is where Mommy comes to school," Suazo said. "I like that the school provides ways to enhance family life."
Gonzales, dressed as a police officer, said he was proud of his mom.
"Her school is fun," he said.
The recreation center was filled with game booths ran by campus clubs and organizations.
International Business Club President David Teuscher, running a face-painting table, said parents are classmates and fellow club members. His brother is a student and parent, and Teuscher said he can see how his school experience is different.
"I think parents are more determined to succeed at college and achieve their goals," Teuscher said. "They have to have more of a struggle in balancing the load."
Teuscher said CSI's atmosphere benefits from having students who raise kids, and was glad the club could be a part of providing for familial needs.
"Kids are a part of life as well. Hopefully these kinds of events help those students slip back from the day-to-day grind and enjoy some time having fun with their kids," Teuscher said.
