Salt Lake CC led to victory by freshman guard
A one-woman show derailed the No. 18 College of Southern Idaho women’s basketball team at home Thursday night as Haley Holmstead scored half of No. 3 Salt Lake Community College’s points in the Bruins’ 80-62 victory.
The loss left CSI at 3-3 and 0-1 in SWAC play, while Salt Lake improved to 6-1 and 1-0.
Holmstead, a 5-foot-7 freshman guard, added 40 points to her season tally and leads the Scenic West Athletic Conference in scoring.
CSI coach Randy Rogers acknowledged that CSI lost because of Holmstead.
“We focused on her all week. Go left. Go left (he told his players). They were going right,” he said.
Rogers said earlier this week, “We’re going to have to step up to a major challenge.”
That challenge might have been reachable had it not been for Holmstead.
CSI led for about two minutes at the beginning of the game, and that was as good as it got. The Bruins tied the game at 4-4 and rolled to a 46-30 halftime lead.
Salt Lake out-rebounded CSI and outshot the Golden Eagles from the free throw line.
CSI played without point guard Kiki Lockett, who was sidelined for another game with a foot injury. Rogers said it was unknown when she would return.
Posts Shauneice Samms and Laurel Kearsley each scored 11 points for CSI.
“I think offensively we did a pretty good job tonight,” Rogers said. “They were more aggressive.
“When you’re coaching junior college basketball, in one year the whole program can turn around in personnel. We haven’t hit our ceiling yet.”
CSI hosts host Snow College Saturday.
