After two days of action packed rodeo following the Rocky Mountain Region Rodeo, the First Annual College of Southern Idaho Fall Classic was a success by all measures.

"A first-time event like this - you never know how it will go but you hope to be able to do it again. We got a lot of great support from our old and new sponsors. Without them you couldn't put on an event like this," said CSI rodeo coach Steve Birnie.

A combination of hard work behind the chutes as well as on the arena floor resulted in a good showing by the CSI rodeo team.

Jesse Wright of CSI combined a 75-point ride on Fancy with the 80 points from Friday night to win the saddle bronc riding with 155 points. Wright's teammate Bailey Tubbs had the high-marked ride in the short go, scoring 77 points on Satin Sheets and finished second with 149 points. CSI teammates Alex Wright and Johnson placed fourth and sixth, respectfully.

CSI's duo of Aaron Skinner and Tyrel Jensen posted the fastest time in team roping with a run of 6.1 seconds and grabbed the top spot with 19.8 seconds. Skinner also added a second place showing in tie-down. For his consistent performance, he was chosen the Fall Classic all-around cowboy.

"I drew really well," said Skinner. "I had fun in tie-down and in team-roping, I have a really good heeler (Tyrel Jensen)."

In bull riding, three men came into Saturday night with points on the board from Friday night but despite the outstanding efforts of all riders in the short go, only one man was able to cover his bull. Monty Johnson of CSI, the top rider in the Rocky Mountain Region, claimed the first place buckle scoring 85 points on Undertaker. Zack Elliott took third place with a 72-point ride on Friday night.

At 170-pounds and stocky in stature, Johnson is not viewed with the normal body frame usually found in most bull riders.

"I am almost too stout but I have strong legs and a strong upper body," said Johnson. "Besides bull riding is mostly in your head."

The CSI cowgirls did not win any of the three women's events but had an impressive performance in breakaway with a third place finish by Megan Mackenzie, a fourth by Molly Small and a sixth by Jackie Smith. Smith also claimed a third in goats. The top barrel racer in the region, Darbie Kaiser, placed fifth in the short go.

In individual honors, Smith was awarded the all-around cowgirl for the Fall Classic.

After a seventh place finish in the first rodeo at Utah State and a third place at Idaho State last weekend, Smith sees a marked improvement in the CSI women's team.

"All the girls are working harder and the new girls are realizing what it is all about," said Smith.

The Fall Classic was the final fall rodeo for the CSI rodeo team. The updated regional team and individual standings will be available as the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association posts the results on the NIRA web page. CSI returns to rodeo competition March 6-7 in Ogden, Utah at Weber State University.
