RUPERT - The term "homecoming" had a literal meaning for Minico Friday night.

Five weeks into the season, the Minico football team finally played a home game. And while it took a while for them to become reacquainted with where the Bill Mathews Field end zones are located, the Spartans earned a 28-0 win over Wood River to remain unbeaten in Great Basin Conference play.

The game had a déjà vu feeling to Minico's 29-0 win over Burley last week. Just like last week, the teams played a scoreless first half. Just like last week, Minico used its wildcat offense on its first drive of the second half and scored a touchdown. And just like last week, Edgar Espinoza returned an interception for a TD on the ensuing possession to give Minico all the momentum.

"We have a great crowd and our coaches have us pumped up, then we go out there and we just can't perform," said Minico's Moises Iturra, who had an interception and a 53-yard touchdown reception. "We need to step it up (in the first half) in the future if we want to win more games. Can't take anything away from Wood River. They're a great team and we weren't ready to play."

Wood River (1-3, 0-1) executed its game plan to near perfection in the first half, controlling the clock with running backs Tyler Peters, Alex Padilla and Nathan Farrow. Wood River gained 200 yards of total offense.

Owning the time of possession, the Wolverines kept Minico's offense off the field. When the Spartans did have the ball, several drives were marred by seven first-half penalties.

"As a coaching staff we have to figure out what gets these guys going," said Minico coach Tim Perrigot. "We've got to be able to play all four quarters, especially as we move forward in our schedule and into the playoffs."

Minico (3-2, 2-0) rushed for 187 yards, led by Brady May's 14 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Kade Miller completed 13 of 19 passes for 174 yards and a score. Pete Coats was all over the field with a handful of carries, receptions and kick returns to go along with his 35-yard touchdown run.

Wood River hosts Burley next Friday in a key conference matchup. Minico has a short week to prepare for a home game with Preston on Thursday.
